Star Puzzles take the circle idea and fold it. A five- or six-pointed star gives you two sets of positions at once — the outer points and the inner intersections — and the rule usually runs between them rather than around them. That single change forces you to hold two relationships in mind instead of one, which is why most solvers find stars a real step up.
The interesting part is that a star gives you more evidence than a circle. Each point touches several inner cells, so a correct theory has to satisfy several constraints simultaneously. When it does, you can be almost certain you are right before you type anything. When it does not, the exact place it failed usually tells you what to try next — too small, and you need a product; inconsistent on one arm only, and you have probably mixed up which direction the rule travels.
Harder star packs deliberately break symmetry. One arm might use a different operation, or the centre might be the sum of alternating points rather than all of them. These puzzles reward solvers who write down what they know instead of trying to keep six numbers in working memory, and they are excellent preparation for the multi-condition word problems that show up in competitive exams.
Play stars when circles have started to feel automatic. They use the same arithmetic but demand more structure in how you search.
How to solve Star Puzzles
- Treat each arm as its own mini-puzzle, then look for the rule that all arms share.
- Test whether the centre relates to every point or only to alternating ones.
- When one arm refuses to fit, re-read the direction of your rule before changing the operation.
