About Triangles puzzles
Triangles are the most economical puzzles on Numerly. Three corner numbers and a centre value — that is all the information there is, so the rule has to be simple enough to state in a sentence and precise enough to be unique. Multiply two corners and subtract the third. Add all three and halve. Square the smallest and take away the largest. Each triangle poses exactly one of these, and you have very little redundancy to lean on.
That scarcity is the training value. With a circle you can test a theory on four pairs; with a triangle you get one shot per figure, so the discipline you build is checking a rule against the *other* triangles in the same pack rather than within a single one. Packs are constructed so that neighbouring puzzles share a family of rules, which means a theory you prove on puzzle one often unlocks puzzle two in seconds.
This is also the world where mental arithmetic speed pays off most visibly. Because the numbers stay small, the bottleneck is not calculation but the number of candidate rules you can try per minute. Solvers who know their times tables cold clear hard triangle packs several times faster than solvers who do not — a very direct argument for the drills every maths teacher recommends.
Play triangles when you want short, sharp sessions. They are the best world for a five-minute break.
How to solve Triangles
- Try sum, product and sum-of-two-minus-one before anything exotic.
- Compare against the previous puzzle in the pack — rules travel in families.
- Watch the size of the centre: much larger than the corners means multiplication is involved.
